GOINDOL PROJECT

How it began

피아니스트 정은혜의 <고인돌 프로젝트>는 여섯 개 소주제에 관한 즉흥연주로 시작했다. 주요 편성은 베이시스트 이승하와 드러머 김선기를 포함한 트리오이며 이를 중심으로 확장된 앙상블도 가능하다. 이 프로젝트는 2022년 1월 19일 애드바트에서 처음 기록(녹음, 녹화)되었다. 

The Goindol Project started out as an improvisational suite consisting of six pieces around six sub-themes. The core instrumentation is a trio with Seung-ha Lee (double bass), Sunki Kim (drums/percussion), which may or may not extend to a larger ensemble. The project was first recorded on January 19, 2022 at Advart Music in Seoul (not published yet).

고인돌은 유라시아 전역에 퍼져있는데, 총 5만여 개의 고인돌 중 70퍼센트가 한반도에서 발견된다. 고인돌이 어떻게 왜 만들어져 유라시아 대륙에 퍼져있는지에 대한 다양한 이론이 있으나 많은 이들은 무덤의 기능을 했다고 보고 문명의 시작을 대표하는 유적으로 여긴다. 또한 최근에는 한반도 내 선사시대 거석문화를 보여주는 세계유산으로써 그 가치와 의미가 더욱 확장되는 연구들이 나왔다. 특히 고대의 천문학적 지식이 담겨있다는 분석이 그것이다. 고인돌 위에 구멍을 뚫어 북두칠성과 같이 중요한 별자리를 새겨 놓는다거나 여러 작은 고인돌의 군집으로 별자리를 표현하기도 했다. 이는 각 별의 밝기까지 고려하여 고인돌 크기를 달리했다고 한다. 

Goindol(s) are speard across Eurasia. In the Korean Peninsula alone, about 70 percent of the 50,000 Goindol(s) or dolmens have been discovered. There are many theories regarding how and why Goindol(s) were built and installed. Many believe that its function is that of a tomb representing the beginning of civilization as it requires labor of a large group of people. Goindol(s) in Korea are usually small in size, notably showing ancient knowledge of astronomy. Holes are either directly engraved in the stones or arranged in groups in the form of constellations such as the Big Dipper.

고인돌에는 아직 알려지지 않은 수천 년 세월의 이야기가 담겨있다. 이는 우리 고대의 문화와 문명을 증명하는 존재이다. 정은혜는 고인돌을 옛 조상이 살던 고대의 시간과 그들이 성실히 관찰하고 조화를 이루며 더불어 살고자 바라봤던 그 우주로 여행을 향하는 통로의 문으로 본다. 고인돌 프로젝트를 통하여 옛 ‘우리’와 다시금 연결되는 시간이 되길 바란다.

Goindol has many untold stories from many thousands of years ago. This is the very evidence of ancient culture and civilization that has long since vanished. Ms. Jeong views Goindol as a gateway for the audience and the performers altogether to travel to the ancient time and perhaps to the universe that her ancestors observed and lived harmoniously with. She hopes the Goindol Project concert reconnects us to the old "us".

이번 공연에서는 모든 6개의 소주제를 각각 연주하지 않고 이어지는 30여분의 두 세트의 연주로 재구성한다. 또한 춘천 중도에서 끊임없이 제기되고 있는 이슈를 주목하는 연주를 더할 예정이다. 중도에서 선사시대부터 청동기 시대 중기에 이르는 시기의 다량의 문화재가 발견되었다. 이는 충분한 시간을 갖고 연구와 보존을 요구하는 한국 고대사 연구에 중요한 유적지임에도 불구하고 발굴과정이 불투명하게 또 졸속으로 처리되었고 사회적 합의 없이 테마파크 레고랜드 건설을 추진하여 고고학자 및 많은 시민들의 공분을 샀다. 5천년의 유구한 역사를 눈앞의 이익에 쉽게 팔아버리는 행위는 근현대사에서 수도 없이 일어났고 이렇게 또 반복되었다. In this concert, all six themes will be restructured into about an hour-long performance. In addition to the suite, the trio will perform a segment to bring attention to the ongoing issue in Jung-do (or Jung Island), Chuncheon, where significant amounts of prehistoric to mid-bronze era’s artifacts were discovered. Although the study and preservation of these sites is crucial to understanding Korea's ancient history, which is still a mystery in many ways, a theme park, Legoland, went ahead with its construction despite strong opposition from many citizens. The Goindol(s) and other relics were immediately disassembled and removed from the sites to make way for the construction. Archeologists and historians were hardly able to observe the excavation process, even blocked to enter the sites. Find more info in news article in Korean.
