한 좋은 친구로부터 영상편집 앱 사용법을 배웠다. 마침 어제 아이패드 앱 피아노로 연주하고 아이폰 보이스 메모에 녹음한 음악이 있어 함께 편집을 해봤다. 디지털 시대에 참으로 걸맞은 방식의 창작과정을 하며, 이 영상을 올리는 순간 온라인 상에 한 조각의 정보로 둥둥 떠다닐 이 디지털 창작물의 운명에 대한 묵념을 했다.
gif 파일들로 만든 이 영상의 소스는 모두 다른 이들의 창작물이다. 워터마크가 찍힌 파일을 숨김없이 그대로 둔 이유는 건축물의 철근을 그대로 드러낸 것 같이 완성이 덜된 듯한 느낌을 주지는 모르지만 내가 이 소스를 재가공하여 사용할 수 있도록 한 그 창작인에 대한 최소한의 예의다.
필요한 파일을 찾아다니면서 발견한 기하학적인 3D를 담은 gif들을 마주하며 나는 기쁘고 안심이 되었다. 평소에 음악을 들을 때 누군가는 색채를 본다고 하지만 나는 3D의 기하적 모양이 움직이는 모양을 종종 “본다”. 그런 ‘영상’을 머릿속에서 보게 만들어주는 음악들을 특히 좋아하기도 하다. 그래서 이런 나의 음악 인지 방식을 연결시켜주는 또 다른 영상을 내 머릿속 바깥에 만들고 싶었다.
이런 류의 영상작업을 하는 작가를 찾아 협업하거나 또는 영상 자체를 제작하는 방법을 배워야만 평소에 구현하고 싶었던 것을 만들 수 있을꺼라고 생각했었다. 물론 큰 프로젝트를 진행할 수 있는 여건이 된다면 그렇게 협업을 하고 싶다. 그러나 작은 규모로 즉각적인 창작 및 즉각적인 발행을 함으로써 오히려 큰 규모의 프로젝트를 만들어 갈 수 있다는 생각이 든다. 그것이 더욱 현실적인 방법인 것 같다.
한편으로는 무상으로 제공되며 즉각적으로 공유되어 저작권과 창작물의 고정된 창작의 주체와 향유의 주체의 경계가 거의 뚜렷하지 않은 gif의 속성을 경험한 일이 신선하게 다가왔다. 많은 다른 창작가들이 Giphy 플랫폼에 올려놓은 창작물을 나의 것으로 만든 과정 또한 즉각적이었다. 그 어떠한 예술행위보다도 더 쉽고 빠르게 ‘나’를 거쳐 이 재료들이 다른 형태를 뗘 또 다른 본질을 갖게 되었다. 나라는 존재가 고체보다는 얼마나 유체 fluid에 가까운지 느끼게 해 준 작업이었다. #현대예술 #gifart #incubatedindreams #digitallife #contemporarymusic

이 앨범을 제작한 Mung Music Label은 색소포니스트 이선재의 큐레이션으로 진취적인 한국음악가들을 국내외에 소개하는, 앞으로도 좋은 작품을 내놓아 더욱 성장할 레이블입니다. 개인적으로도 연주자와 한마음으로 많은 애를 써주셔서 고맙습니다.

Huge thanks to Mung Music Label as it created the space for the kind of music I do and helped to set my footing in the scene in Korea even more. Mung Music is launched in July and has already released four records before Abyss. I think the label has a real bright future!
I also thank Minki for initiating our collaboration, which nurtured both of us a great deal during the process!

Only now I’ve found a review of my <<The Colliding Beings, Chi-Da>> album in a Norwegian magazine “Salt Peanuts” published in March! (Googling my name to dig data on me led to this discovery. Funny I google myself but I needed to do that)
I especially love the indirect invitation to some venues in Oslo in Norway and Copenhagen in Denmark. Would be nice later when we all can handle COVID okay.
The writer Jan Granlie wrote, “The music is extremely strong and intense all the way, even in the quiet parts, and it is fascinating to hear Jeong and her fellow musicians communicate and improvise over the five "stretches" in such a strong way. The band that would have fit perfectly at Blow Out in Oslo or at Klub Primi in Copenhagen.” (google translation)

Didn’t think I would ever be back in making music in a studio in this unprecedented time. I am blessed to work with wonderful people. The session was flooded with music, love, and trust! The process isn’t done yet so reserving my energy and inspiration for the new baby.
